The Syrah 2006 is the first vintage where all the grapes come from a single vineyard, namely our Faure site, 4 km from False Bay. Wines from a single site hold great interest for me because they are a reflection of a single variety from a single terroir and specific vintage, a snapshot in time. Of course it is simple to make unblended, single -site wines, but getting the complexity and depth of flavour is not so easy, which is why many winemakers have to blend. However, I have been working with this site for 9 years (as of 2010) but the 2006 vintage is the first year I felt that the wine had the interest and complexity to stand up in its own trousers. It has taken intensive work with our grower, Johan Faure ,to get this vineyard to the stage where it has the root system and canopy to completely utilize the superb soils and unique terroir.

For me, the crystalline purity of this wine is astonishing with precise, intricate flavours of plum, graphite and fynbos. Although full bodied, the wine exhibits a finesse and litheness which makes it a pleasure to drink. I dislike overly extract, thick, ponderous wines and the Foundry 2006 Syrah displays the vivacity and energy of a wine at peace with its origin.

The 2010 Grenache Blanc had big shoes to fill with the 2009 being widely acclaimed and awarded, including the ultimate accolade of 5 stars in the John Platter wine guide 2011, but I am really pleased with the 2010. The wine shows the same quince, greengage and almond notes of its older sibling, but perhaps has a little more stuffing in the mid -palate, but still has that whistle -clean, highland -stream finish. This wine is a long way away from those thick, gloopy Rhone wannabees which seem to be popping up these days. For me, clarity, focus and harmony are what I look for and I hope you will agree that this has been achieved in my new Grenache Blanc.

I have been producing Viognier since 2004, amongst the first in South Africa and I honestly believe the 2008 is the best yet. Why? Simple- the 2008 is again a single vineyard expression from a vineyard even closer to False Bay than our Syrah, a mere 3.5 km. But don’t worry; it also enjoys an elevation of 85 meters above sea level so it gets the advantages of both altitude and a maritime, cool climate. Again, I cannot hide my aesthetic preferences with this wine-purity, intensity and sub-microscopic focus on delicious exotic fruit and minerally flavours. This wine is the antidote to those overblown, thick muffin -top Viogniers from warm areas. I am so pleased that both the Viognier 2008 and Syrah 2006 are single terroir wines, I feel a bit like a proud dad having got these vines out of nappies and into adulthood.

In the pipeline are a Roussanne 2010 and a new Syrah from our home farm in Paardeberg, same grape, same philosophy, different terroir. The result?
